Many people are unknowingly keeping pet goldfish in an unhealthy environment. Even the biggest fishbowl should not house a single goldfish. Here are some fishy facts to help your goldie have a long and healthy life:

- Goldfish can live for up to 50 years!
- Comets can grow more than a foot long
- Fancy double-tailed goldfish can grow to more than 6" long!
- Roughly 5-10 gallons per goldfish is best (2 goldfish in a 10-20 gallon tank)
- Fish produce urine & feces. In a bowl wastes build up, soon becoming a toilet bowl!
- An aquarium filter converts fish waste to less harmful nitrates
- Weekly water changes (change 25% of the water) get rid of these nitrates
- Algae eaters sometimes attack goldfish damaging their skin.
- Goldfish should not be kept with aggressive fish
- Goldfish don't "grow to the limits of their environment": Healthy fish grow.
Unhealthy fish don't.

A siamese fighting fish (betta) is a much better choice for your fishbowl. Bettas are small fish, they are not very active and they do not produce very much waste. These characteristics make them a fairly good fish to live in a bowl.

Tanks and ponds are best for goldfish.
